• Starting in May DMH is expanding our programs to include their Men’s Community Reintegration Program.

Steven was interviewed on the radio by Empre Broadcasting Group to talk about DFYL’s Reading & Rhythm Program.

• Steven was called back to lead a second drum journey with members of the hit TV show Transparent.

• Steven Angel led a drum journey with the film crew of the Golden Globe award winning Best TV Show of the Year Transparent!

• Dartmouth College is now the lead investigator on the Reading & Rhythm Research project. Dartmouth College is currently writing up the grant and will be submitting the application to the National Institute of Health (NIH) in October.

• Twin Town Treatment Centers has contracted Steven Angel to conduct DFYL’s drum therapy program with patients at two of their centers.

• Film composer John Powell, a long-time supporter of the Drumming for Your Life Institute donates again!

• Johnny Depp donates for the second year! His generous contribution has helped us continue to conduct our unique programs in K-12 grade schools, juvenile halls, detention camps, and rehab facilities.

• The Raynier Institute & Foundation, an arts education company out of Seattle, has donated $75,000 to the Reading & Rhythm Research project. We are still seeking $100,000 to complete the research. DFYL is partnering with Plymouth University, Dartmouth College, and UCLA to complete the research.

• Sherice Bellamy of BellamyPR and James Wallace of World Bookings are coordinating a PSA for the Reading & Rhythm Program. It will be geared towards athletes who are struggling readers.

• Jeff Gornbein DrPH-Senior Statistician at the UCLA Statistical Bio-mathematical Consulting Clinic provided a statistical analysis of the Reading & Rhythm program. In comparing two classes using our program with two control classrooms, our program showed a significant difference with a p value = 0.0182.

Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health has renewed our contracts with juvenile halls and detention camps for the 8th consecutive year.

• Johnny Depp Donates. We are excited and honored to have Johnny Depp join  the DFYL Family. Johnny Depp is strong advocate for reading and believes our Reading & Rhythm program is a real solution to the literacy problem that affects the kids in our society.

• Fox News channel 11, Anchorwoman Laura Diaz produced a segment on children with learning disabilities. The segment features the Reading & Rhythm program in a LAUSD special-needs classroom, at Hollenback Middle School. The segment aired in November 2013.

• A Big Thanks! goes to DW Drums for donating drum pads to our teachers for the Reading & Rhythm program.

• The American Psychotherapy Association published "The Use of Drumming in the Development of Self-Trust and Healing in the Therapeutic Process" in the 2013 summer issue. Written by Dr. Stephen Sideroff and Steven Angel, this article is based on the Rhythm of Discovery technique and is approved for 1.5 continuing education credits.

• Teachers were trained in the Reading & Rhythm program at Cashman Elementary school from April 29 to May 7, 2013. Students participated in Reading & Rhythm twice a week for 4 weeks from May through June. For pre and post testing Dibels-DAZE was used and the average increase was 24% in reading comprehension.

• A very successful Reading & Rhythm Teacher Training was completed at Cashman and Amesbury Elementary Schools in Massachusetts - May 2013

• Steven Angel is overseeing the training of 10 teachers at St Angela’s Ursuline School, in the UK.  St Angela’s, founded in 1862, is a Catholic secondary school for girls located in East London  – November 2012

• Seven counselors successfully completed an intense weekend training in the Rhythm of Discovery technique at The Betty Ford Institute – May 2012

• The IRB (Institutional Review Board at UCLA) approves research for the Reading & Rhythm program to enhance reading and instruction. Research will be funded by the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health and will take place in three detention camps. Our research will focus on at-risk-youth and their levels of motivation, stress, and reading – May 2012

• DFYL is training a music educator in Australia and a teacher in England via Skype in the Reading & Rhythm program. Both are presenting our program to schools as we look into setting up chapters in each country – May 2012
